Sinclair QL Wafer Expansion Module 1985 (WISPER 10, 8509) - A closer look!
The very unique original Sinclair Research Ltd. item at The Centre for Computing History (CCH) in Cambridge.
The Sinclair QL Wafer Expansion Card was codenamed WISPER and had the 4 inch wafer with 16Kbit chips resulting in a net capacity of 0.5Mbyte.
Even WISPER for the Sinclair QL never made it onto the market, the next generations for bigger computer systems were eventually made & marketed by Fujitsu/Anamartic.

On January 12th 1984 Sir Clive Sinclair presented the Sinclair QL Professional Computer in a typical Sinclair-extravaganza style launch event at the Intercontinental Hotel, Hyde Park Corner, London. This was exactly 12 days earlier than Steve Jobs presented the Apple Macintosh. While the Mac did it in the long run and is a mainstream product in the present and future, the QL went into dust. Bef...

    Very rare and special indeed! It would have been amazing to see what Sir Clive could have achieved in the 1990s, had the IBM PC not killed the competition.

    Tony Tebby once wrote to me that the first versions of the "Futura" circuit boards were so bad that he had canceled the whole thing early on.

  • @ralfi1221
    @ralfi1221 10 дней назад

    The text of the SQB manual was printed with a daisywheel printer with one of Tony Tebby's inhouse printing programs, similar to the later used "QPLQ" for Epson LQ printers. The former program was intelligent, as it leaves gaps on the paper, if the fount was changed to e.g. italic. Then you could change the daisywheel, the paper winded back ant printed the rest. Very clever. QJump later used "QPLQ" which used all inbuilt founts of the LQ printer. "QPLQ" and the former program were written in SuperBASIC. They both used non-proportional founts from the printer but set every letter "on the fly" to the place on paper, so it looks, as if you have used proportional founts. It worked a bit like "TeX", using similar "Escapes".

    Three wheels and a low center of gravity make it very safe and stable.... Until you get broadsided by a truck!!!!!! No turn signals, no brake lights, NO LIGHTS PERIOD!!!! Oh yes it's perfectly safe, it should come with its own blindfold. 😆

      The point is that NeXT computers do not have a keyboard connector, their keyboard connect to the NeXT monitors or the NeXT Soundbox. There's a remake/clone of the Soundbox PCBA available at quite a price.

    Sir Clive Sinclair was 41 years to soon and the C5 wasn't a failure it was just really a prototype of what would involve into what we have today. Battery technology was unfairly rubbish in 1983 along with other materials. This should have been sold as toy and fun machine to enjoy as fun factor then it would have sold better. Clive Sinclair was way ahead of his time and a gunius unfortunatey Technology was against Sinclair and coming up with brave new amazing ideas. However, at that time of little technology developments of the 1980s was massive drawback. Sinclair's ideas never went unnoticed and have been improve upon with new technology. Even modern electric cars today are certainly not without problems and drawbacks and will never be perfected without the Solid-State -Battery technology and with self contained changing. Yes! I totally agree the ride height of the C5 was a death trap and it wasn't safe for public roads. although, the idea was ahead of its time and paved the way to our future of Electric Vehicles. 1984 - 30 year olds laughing at it from the drivers seat of an Escort XR3.40 years later. 2024 - 70 year olds riding to Tesco Express on their mobility scooters. Strange world

      @@QLvsJAGUAR do you have an email I written a basic arduino code that should convert basic usb protocol to the neXt via serial , can the neXt boot with terminal input? From what I read it can 9600 baud 8 data bits no parity and a stop bit . So it should be able to read the serial hex and register as keyboard input 🤞

    What's the point of booting without a keyboard? Won't you be unable to do anything with the OS anyways? Are there NeXT keyboard emulators maybe, for example in the form of a microcontroller that hooks up to the keyboard port?

      I wanted to see if the internal SCSI drive was still OK and had a working NeXTstep installation on it. Thanks to the help of Cédric from the Musée Bolo, we were able to fix the boot parameters of the NeXTstation the other day in their reserve in Lausanne with a working combo of NeXT Soundbox, keyboard & mouse. www.museebolo.ch/en/

    This was a great idea, far ahead of it's time and Sinclair knew it. It was supposed to lead to a battery powered car. We're only just there now. Shame it never worked out really - maybe we'd have those flying cars by now (see the end of BBC's 'Micro Men' 😉)

    The Sinclair C5 was not safe, durable or reliable. It was potentialy quite dangerous. My late father worked for Suffolk County Council Highways (as a road safety officer at the time). The leaflet handed out by "ROSPA" (for the C5) was a joke.

    I am so glad I watched this video and you rescued these gems. My second home computer was a Sinclair QL which I bought when launched in the UK. This brings back many fond memories and was a machine ahead of it's time. I eventually sold it after a few years when the PC era came in, but I am glad I didn't throw it away. I sold it to a collector at the time in the early 1990s. What a machine that was, and such a beautifully looking design.
